This Sunday, which falls on the second day of February this year, coincides with the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. Traditionally known as the Feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary or Candlemas, this day marks the fortieth and final day of the Christmas season, concluding the period of celebration that began on Christmas Day. It is a time to reflect on the wondrous events surrounding the birth of Jesus, the world’s Saviour, and to once again recall God’s enduring promise of grace and salvation for His people.
The Feast of the Presentation commemorates the moment when the Holy Child, the firstborn Son of Mary, was brought to the Temple in Jerusalem by His mother and His foster father, St. Joseph, in accordance with the Law of Moses. This law required that every firstborn male be consecrated to God as a sign of the Covenant He had made with His people. In obedience to this command, Mary and Joseph presented Jesus at the Temple, fulfilling the sacred tradition. There, the Lord was revealed to the Jewish people through the prophetic witness of Simeon and Anna. These two faithful servants, who had long awaited the coming of the Messiah, recognized in the Infant Jesus the fulfilment of God’s promise.
The Presentation of the Lord also prefigures His future mission and ultimate sacrifice. As the Eternal High Priest, Jesus would later offer Himself as the perfect and most worthy sacrifice for the salvation of all humanity. Through His Passion, suffering, and death on the Cross, He would redeem mankind, breaking the chains of sin and death and bringing the light of salvation to the world.
With this feast, the Christmas season officially concludes, and we now prepare to enter the season of Lent—a time of spiritual renewal and reflection. As we embark on this journey of faith, we look ahead to the solemn remembrance of Christ’s suffering and sacrifice, culminating in the triumph of His Resurrection. This transition reminds us of the divine purpose of Christ’s coming into the world: to save us and lead us to eternal life.
