There was once a lighthouse keeper who lived on a rocky shore, ensuring the light always burned bright to guide passing ships. One evening, a storm hit and a traveler sought shelter in his small home. As they sat by the fire, the traveller asked, “You have lived here for years, but does anyone ever thank you for keeping the light burning?” The lighthouse keeper smiled and replied, “It’s not about being noticed. It’s about making sure the light leads others safely home.”
This story mirrors the humble role of John the Baptist in today’s Gospel. John understood his mission—not to seek glory for himself but to direct others to Jesus, the true Light of the world.
The Humility of John the Baptist
John’s disciples express concern that more people are following Jesus instead of John. They seem troubled that John’s influence is fading. But John responds with remarkable humility, saying, “A person can receive only what is given them from heaven… He must become greater; I must become less.”
John knew his role. He was not the Messiah but the one preparing the way for Christ. Like a best man at a wedding, he rejoiced in the arrival of the bridegroom—Jesus. His joy was complete not in gaining followers but seeing them turn to Christ.
Applying John’s Message to Our Lives
- Letting Go of Self-Importance:
We often struggle with wanting recognition. We want to be appreciated, acknowledged, or credited for our efforts. But John reminds us that our true purpose is not making ourselves great but pointing others to Jesus. Whether in our families, workplaces, or churches, we must ask: Am I seeking to lift myself, or am I leading others to Christ? - Finding Joy in Serving Christ:
John was joyful because he fulfilled his God-given mission. We, too, find true joy when we embrace our role in God’s plan. Whether we are teachers, parents, leaders, or friends, our calling is to reflect Christ’s love in everything we do. - Recognizing Christ’s Supremacy:
John emphasizes that Jesus is “the one who comes from above” and is above all. This means that our lives should be centred on Him. In a world that glorifies self-promotion, John teaches us to step aside and let Christ take centre stage in our hearts.
Becoming Less, So Christ Becomes More
Like the lighthouse keeper whose purpose was to guide ships safely, John the Baptist dedicated his life to leading people to Christ. His words challenge us today: Are we living in a way that points others to Jesus?
May we have the same humility as John, finding joy not in our success but in making Christ known. For in the end, the greatest fulfilment comes when we say, “He must become greater; I must become less.”
