As we celebrate World Mission Sunday, we are reminded of our primary duty as Christians: to witness to the truth that Christ lives, through our lives, our example, and our words. A great man once said, “Preach Christ, but use words only when necessary.” From the moment we became Christians, we also became missionaries, and this role continues throughout our lives. Everything we do or fail to do, say or fail to say, wear or choose not to wear, the way we speak or remain silent—these are all ways in which we bear witness. Whether we realize it or not, we are either proclaiming Christ or denying Him in every action. Either way, we are constantly witnessing.
Being a missionary isn’t limited to carrying a Bible in one hand and a bell in the other, though such activities may be part of it. Mission work is much broader—it’s the very essence of our lives. Even after engaging in direct outreach or ministry and returning home to rest, the mission continues, often more profoundly. Sadly, many Christians, through their behavior, give Christ a negative image. Every sin we commit sends a message about what we truly believe.
For instance, a man once approached a woman with improper intentions. She responded, “Sir, can’t you see I’m married?” To which the man replied, “Aren’t I also married?” She added, “I can’t do this, I hold a position in the church,” and he laughed, saying, “So do I, in my own church.” In this exchange, the man is still preaching a message, though not the one we should be sharing. His actions say, “I serve a God who is indifferent—blind, deaf, and silent. I call myself a Christian because Christ died for me, but He’s no longer present in my life, so I do whatever I please. Church is just a social gathering, and the Bible’s teachings aren’t really for people like us. Let’s enjoy life while we can.”
As strange as this may sound, many people unknowingly preach this very message, and they are influencing countless others. This is why, despite the growing number of Christians and churches today, evil still thrives in the world.
