Patron Saint of the Sick and Suffering:
St. Alphonsa holds a cherished place in the heart of the Syro-Malabar Church and among all Christians of India. She was the first woman of Indian origin to be canonised by the Catholic Church.
Born as Anna Muttathupadathu on August 19, 1910, in Kudamaloor near Kottayam, Kerala, she lost her mother at a very young age and was lovingly raised by her maternal aunt. From childhood, Alphonsa endured frail health and much suffering, yet she remained filled with deep faith and humility.
Despite numerous marriage proposals, she felt a strong calling to a religious life. In 1927, she joined the Franciscan Clarist Congregation (FCC), taking the name Sister Alphonsa of the Immaculate Conception in 1930. She was known for her radiant humility, compassion for others and joyful acceptance of suffering.
Though she briefly worked as a teacher, her health—including tuberculosis and severe stomach illness—forced her to give up teaching. Yet she offered all her suffering as a sacrifice to God, never complaining but embracing it as her path to holiness.
She entered eternal life on July 28, 1946, at the age of 35, in Bharananganam, Kerala. Today, her tomb at St. Mary’s Forane Church in Bharananganam is a place of pilgrimage, prayer and healing for countless faithful.
Following her canonisation by Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican on 12 October 2008, the tomb of the Saint became an international pilgrimage centre.

Among the miracles attributed to her intercession is the healing of Jinil Joseph, a boy born with clubfoot, after prayers at her tomb.
