Little Emma sat by the window, her tiny fingers tracing the raindrops sliding down the glass. It was Mother’s Day, and she had nothing to give Mama. Her classmates had talked about gifts—necklaces, flowers, breakfast in bed—but Emma had no money for those things.
She sighed and turned to her little brother, Jamie. “What do we do? Mama always gives us everything, but we have nothing for her.”
Jamie, barely five, nodded solemnly. “Maybe we can make something?”
They thought hard. Emma remembered how Mama always woke up before the sun to make their lunches, how she stayed up late when they were sick, and how her laughter made everything feel warm and safe. Then, an idea sparked in her mind.
“Let’s give her a day of rest,” Emma said. “No chores, no cooking, no cleaning—just love.”
Jamie clapped his hands. “Yes! A love day!”
The next morning, they tiptoed around the house. Emma made a wobbly peanut butter sandwich for breakfast, while Jamie tried to pour juice, spilling half of it on the table. They cleaned up as best as possible and carried Mama’s “breakfast” to her bed.
Mama opened her eyes to see her two little ones grinning, a slightly squished sandwich on a plate. She gasped in surprise.
“Happy Mother’s Day, Mama!” they cried.
Tears welled in her eyes—not from the mess but the love. She hugged them tight, feeling their little arms wrap around her.
That day, they took turns brushing her hair, bringing her flowers from the backyard, and even attempting to sweep the floor. The house was a bit messier than usual by evening, but Mama’s heart was full.
As she tucked them into bed that night, Emma whispered, “Mama, do you think we gave you a good present?”
Mama kissed her forehead. “The best one ever, my love. Because it came from your hearts.”
And in that quiet moment, Emma understood—love wasn’t in big gifts or fancy things. Love was in the little hands that reached for hers, the messy kitchen, and the sleepy goodnight kisses.
Love was in everything.
