Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
With hearts full of joy, we welcome a new year of Catechism at St. Bernadette Mission. This is not just the beginning of classes — it is the beginning of another year of walking together in faith, hand in hand with our children, who are the most precious gift God has entrusted to us. As Scripture reminds us:
“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6).
As a father delights in seeing his children grow, the Church rejoices in seeing her young ones grow in wisdom, faith, and love for the Lord.
The Importance of Catechism Today
In today’s world, where children are surrounded by many voices and influences, catechism becomes ever more essential. It is through catechism that our young ones learn to know, love, and follow Christ. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 2225) reminds us:
“Through the grace of the sacrament of marriage, parents receive the responsibility and privilege of evangelising their children.”
Faith formation begins at home, but it flourishes in the whole community. As the CCC also teaches:
“The family is called the domestic church” (CCC 1653).
Children must see the faith lived daily at home — in prayer, in acts of love, and in Christian values.
Our Mission Community’s Role
At St. Bernadette Mission, catechism is not just for our children — it is for the entire parish family. Parents are the first catechists, but they are not alone. Teachers, volunteers, and the whole community stand beside them, supporting this sacred mission. Together, we guide our children not only to learn about the faith but to experience it — in the sacraments, in prayer, in service, and in love for one another. As St. Paul exhorts us:
“Encourage one another and build one another up” (1 Thessalonians 5:11).
A Loving Welcome to Our Children
To all our beloved children: Welcome! This is your special journey of faith. How tender are the words of Jesus:
“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these” (Matthew 19:14).
This year, may you discover how much God loves you. May you grow in friendship with Jesus, learn to listen to His Word, and find joy in being part of His family, the Church.
Gratitude to Teachers and Volunteers
With a grateful heart, I thank our catechism teachers and volunteers. Like spiritual parents, you dedicate time, patience, and love to guide our children. The Lord assures us:
“God is not unjust; He will not forget your work and the love you have shown Him” (Hebrews 6:10).
Through your service, you plant seeds of faith that will one day bear fruit in the lives of our young ones.
Walking Together in Faith
As we begin this new catechetical year, let us walk as one family — parents, children, teachers, and parish community. Together, let us make St. Bernadette Mission a true school of faith and love, where Christ is at the center of everything we do. May the Holy Spirit be our guide. May our Blessed Mother, St. Bernadette, and all the saints intercede for us. And may the Word of God dwell richly in our hearts:
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom” (Colossians 3:16).
