In one well-known story, St. Francis preached to a flock of birds, reminding them to be thankful to God for their beautiful feathers, their freedom, and His constant care. The birds, so the story goes, remained still as he moved among them, only flying away once he gave them permission.
Francis was a man of action, embodying simplicity in both thought and deed. No matter how challenging, he always chose the most straightforward path. When he sought approval for his brotherhood, he boldly went directly to Rome to meet Pope Innocent III. You can imagine the pope’s reaction when this beggar appeared before him! In fact, Pope Innocent initially dismissed Francis.
Though St. Francis could have easily been ordained a priest, he never was. He felt unworthy to ascend the altar and call upon God’s power to perform the miracle of the Eucharist. Yet, Francis held priests in the highest regard. According to Thomas of Celano’s biography, Francis would often kiss the hands of priests “with great faith,” honoring the sacred consecration they received during ordination.
Francis famously said, “If I saw an Angel and a priest, I would kneel first to the priest and then to the Angel.” Regardless of their personal virtues, he revered priests, knowing they were chosen by God for a special purpose.
In many ways, St. Francis’ life parallels that of Jesus Christ. Both were humble men who traveled through small villages, preaching to those who would listen. They had no political power, no armies to command, yet their influence was profound.
St. Francis’ impact on the world came through his example. His approach to life was so revolutionary in its simplicity that anyone can adopt it. To follow Francis’ example, all you need to do is live by the Gospel, lead a simple life, and radiate joy to the world.
When others witness the beauty of a life united with God, they are naturally drawn to it. St. Francis never imagined his small group of brothers would become anything significant. Yet, 800 years later, they are one of the largest religious orders in existence.
Francis believed that a life lived authentically and rooted in the Gospel holds more power than any king or ruler. If you want to change the world, don’t seek power by earthly standards. Instead, begin with yourself, influencing those around you.
The Gospel spreads most powerfully not through vast organizations, but through individuals sharing it person to person.
