On August 4th, the Church honors the feast day of St. John Vianney, the patron saint of priests. Known as the Holy Curé de Ars, John Vianney was born on May 8, 1786, in Dardilly, near Lyon, France, into a family of farmers. He was ordained as a priest in 1815 and initially served as a curate in Écully. In 1818, he was sent to the remote French village of Ars to serve as the parish priest.
Upon his arrival, Father Vianney devoted himself to praying and working for the spiritual conversion of his parishioners. Despite feeling unworthy of his pastoral mission, he dedicated himself entirely to God’s love and service. Through his fervent prayers and exemplary lifestyle, he gradually revived the community’s faith. His powerful homilies on God’s mercy and love inspired profound conversions, even among the most hardened sinners. In addition to his spiritual efforts, he restored his church, founded an orphanage called “La Providence,” and cared for the poor.
Father Vianney’s reputation as a confessor quickly spread, drawing pilgrims from all over France to seek him out for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Committed to the conversion of souls, he often spent up to 16 hours a day in the confessional.
Despite enduring many trials and demonic attacks, St. John Vianney remained steadfast in his faith. Deeply devoted to the Blessed Sacrament, he spent considerable time in prayer and practiced rigorous mortification. He lived on minimal food and sleep, tirelessly serving with humility, gentleness, patience, and cheerfulness well into his seventies.
St. John Vianney passed away on August 4, 1859. Over 1,000 people, including the bishop and numerous priests of the diocese, attended his funeral, recognizing his life as a paragon of priestly holiness.
Canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1925, the Holy Curé of Ars is revered as the patron saint of priests. Each year, over 450,000 pilgrims visit Ars to honor his holy life. In 2009, commemorating the 150th anniversary of St. John Vianney’s death, Pope Benedict XVI declared the Year for Priests. In a Letter to Clergy, the Pope encouraged all priests to emulate the dedication of the Curé of Ars to their priestly vocation.

We pray for strength and resilience for those families facing challenges. Surround them with Your comforting presence and provide them with the courage to overcome any obstacles.
Bless the land with prosperity and the people with good health and happiness. May harmony and unity prevail, and may Your light shine brightly in every corner of Wayanad and Vilangad.
