A New Teaching from the Church
On November 4, 2025, the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith released a new document titled Mater Populi Fidelis (Mother of the Faithful People). This document reflects over thirty years of papal guidance regarding the role of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the life of the Church.
The Church reaffirms with clarity and love that: Mary is truly our mother — but Christ alone is the Redeemer and Mediator.
What Does the Document Teach?
- Mary is Mother of the Faithful
Mary’s ‘Yes’ (her Fiat) to the angel (Luke 1:38) made her:
- Mother of Jesus
- Mother to all who believe in Jesus
- Mother of the Church
Her motherhood is spiritual, real, and ongoing. She loves, cares for, and intercedes for all of us.
2. Christ Alone is Our Redeemer
The document rejects the title “Co-Redemptrix” in the official teaching of the Church. The word ‘co-‘ may wrongly suggest equality with Christ. But Christ alone redeemed humanity through His death and resurrection.
“There is salvation in no one else.” — Acts 4:12
Mary cooperated with God’s plan, but she did not perform the act of redemption. The Redeemer is Jesus Christ alone.
3. Christ Alone is the Mediator
Some people use the title ‘Mediatrix’ for Mary. The Church clarifies that:
“There is one mediator between God and humanity, the man Christ Jesus.” — 1 Timothy 2:5-6
Mary prays for us, but she does not stand between us and Christ. She leads us to Him — she never replaces Him.
4. Mary Has Not Lost Her Importance
Some may worry that removing titles means reducing Mary’s role. The document strongly says: Absolutely not. Mary’s importance comes from her faith, obedience, motherly love, presence at the Cross, and guidance to the Church.
Her greatness does not depend on titles, but on her heart and example. Mary always points to Jesus: “Do whatever He tells you.” — John 2:5
What This Means for Us
As the mother of the Faithful, Mary:
- Prays for us, comforts us and guides us to
- Teaches us trust, humility, and
We are encouraged to:
- Pray the Rosary
- Honor Mary in feasts
- Seek her intercession
- Follow her example of saying ‘Yes’ to God every day
Mater Populi Fidelis reminds us that:
- Jesus is our Redeemer and Mediator
- Mary is our mother, Guide, and
Let us love Mary deeply, without confusing her role with Christ’s. Her joy is not to be praised instead of Jesus but to lead us to Him, her Son and our Savior.
Understanding Dogma
A dogma in the Catholic Church is:
- A teaching officially declared by the church
- It is divinely revealed and must be believed by all Catholics
- Denying a dogma means rejecting a truth that God has revealed
In short:
Dogmas are core beliefs of the faith that Catholics cannot ignore. There are Four Marian Dogmas
- Mary, Mother of God (Theotokos) – AD 431, Council of Ephesus Mary is truly the mother of Jesus, who is God.
- Perpetual Virginity of Mary
Mary remained a virgin before, during, and after the birth of Jesus.
- Immaculate Conception – 1854, Pope Pius IX
Mary was conceived without original sin, full of God’s grace from the very beginning.
- Assumption of Mary – 1950, Pope Pius XII
Mary was taken body and soul into heaven at the end of her life.
A Note on Marian Maximalism
A group of theologians or faithful who emphasize Mary’s role in salvation to the greatest extent possible are known as Marian Maximalists. They give Mary a very high place in the plan of redemption, sometimes beyond what the Church officially teaches as dogma.
Key ideas of the Maximalist group include:
- Mary as Co-Redemptrix
- Mary as Mediatrix of All Graces.
They sought to add Mary as Co-Redemptrix as a fifth dogma. In response, the Church published the document Mater Populi Fidelis.
Closing Reflection
Mary’s greatness is found not in titles, but in her faithful love and her constant invitation: “Do whatever He tells you.” — John 2:5
May we, like her, live our own daily ‘Yes’ to God — trusting, serving, and bringing others to Jesus, the Lord of life and our Redeemer.
