Celebrating Christ, King of the Universe
The feast of Christ the King in 2025 is on Sunday, November 23, 2025. This feast is also known as the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, falls on the last Sunday of the Liturgical year, just before the season of Advent begins. As the liturgical year draws to a close, the Church invites us to contemplate and honour Jesus Christ as King of the Universe—a profound reminder that His kingdom of truth, justice, peace, and love stands above every earthly power and authority. This great solemnity brings the liturgical year 2025 to its completion, directing our hearts once more to the One who reigns not from a throne of gold, but from the Cross.
Instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1925, this feast emerged in a world unsettled by the rise of secularism, nationalism, and ideologies seeking to push God out of public life. In the aftermath of the First World War—when monarchies collapsed and new political systems rose through communism, fascism, and movements rooted in human strength rather than divine truth—the Pope proclaimed an unchanging reality: Jesus Christ reigns supreme. His rule is not imposed by force but offered through mercy, sacrifice, and unfailing love.
Why the Feast Matters Today
In a world increasingly marked by political tension, fear, and moral confusion, the feast invites Christians to lift their eyes to the One who holds all history in His hands. Christ’s kingship is not about earthly domination; it is about freeing hearts, healing wounds, and building a kingdom of peace.
“His dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not pass away.” — Daniel 7:14
Christ’s kingship extends to individuals, families, societies, and nations, calling each of us to allow His peace to reign in our hearts.
“He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” — Colossians 1:17
Calvary is Christ’s kingdom. His throne is the Cross. His first courtiers are two criminals; His first subjects, a jeering crowd. Yet His kingship shines most brilliantly in this moment of apparent defeat—a kingship of love.
The Significance of Christ’s Kingship
Christ Reigns Over All Creation
Christ is not only the head of the Church but the Lord of the entire universe.
“On His robe and on His thigh, He has a name written, ‘King of kings and Lord of lords’.” — Revelation 19:16
Earthly Power vs. Divine Authority
Earthly rulers rise and fall; empires come and go. But Christ’s reign is eternal.
“The Lord reigns; He is robed in majesty.” — Psalm 93:1
The Kingdom of the Heart
Christ does not impose a political program—His reign begins in the humble, surrendered heart.
Living Under Christ the King
Honoring Christ as King means letting Him guide how we live each day:
-Choose mercy over judgment
-Practice justice in daily decisions
-Build peace within your home
-Serve with humility
Let love shape every word and action.
