On May 8, 2025, the Catholic Church witnessed a historic moment with the election of Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost. He is the first American-born pontiff and the first from the Augustinian Order. Born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, Robert Prevost pursued a bachelor’s degree in mathematics at Villanova University. He later joined the Order of Saint Augustine, making his solemn vows in 1981 and ordained a priest in 1982. His missionary journey began in Peru, where he served from 1985 to 1998 in various roles, including parish pastor, seminary teacher, and diocesan administrator. His work in Peru was marked by a profound connection with the local communities, focusing on education, social development, and pastoral care.
Prevost’s leadership qualities led him to serve as the Prior General of the Augustinian Order from 2001 to 2013. He was appointed Bishop of Chiclayo, Peru 2015, where he continued his missionary and pastoral work. In 2023, Pope Francis appointed him the Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, recognising his extensive experience and dedication to the Church’s mission.
Pope Leo XIV’s election continues the Church’s focus on evangelisation and social justice.
